I had my carpets steam cleaned when I moved into my apartment and now it smells like a wet dog. Is this something your company can fix?

Yes.  Carpet cleaning alone can do little to fix this issue and can even make it worse.  Through a combination of cleaning and odor removal processes, this issue can quickly be remedied.  Most likely, the company that cleaned your apartment did not complete a thorough carpet inspection before cleaning.  The previous tenant may have owned a pet.  Although the animal may not have soiled the carpet, it most definitely left behind fur, dander and bacteria.  When magnified, animal hair is rigid and has a barbed appearance. Due to the rigidness of the fur, it gets lodged into and intertwined with carpet fibers.  Even if the carpet is vacuumed every day, it is virtually impossible to remove 100% of the animal hair from the carpet.  With the presence of fur in the carpet, you can rest assured that there are also animal oils and dead skin cells. These oils and skin cells provide a food source for bacterium and other microorganisms.  These microorganisms give off gases as a waste product that manifests as the wonderful “wet dog” smell.
